The club has spent alot of money this year
in providing support to the victims of natural disasters.
-
UK Floods - Summer 2007 - Humber and
Severn - donation of several hundred pounds to Rotary Flood Fund
-
Bangladesh Cyclone - Winter 2008 -
provided 2 Shelterboxes
-
Burma Cyclone/China Earthquake -
provided 2 Shelterboxes - ongoing appeal
As we have always done we joined with the
Rotary Club of Caterham and Caterham Round Table to collect money through
the Christmas Tree of Goodwill street collection. Over the 10 nights
of collection this yielded over £3500. This was donated to East Surrey
Crossroads - a group that provides respite care to carers in the area.
The staff of 27 support carers of all ages to ensure that they get some time
to do the things that they personally need without having to worry about
what is happening to their charges.
As well as these donations the club has made
donations to Chase children's hospice, the Rotary Foundation in respect of
Polio Plus, the Aspinall Foundation and made a presentation of two new benches
for the outside of the
Douglas Brunton Day Centre in conjunction with Caterham Rotary Club and Caterham Round Table.
We have also supported the Chairman of
Caterham Roundtable's sponsored 300 mile bike ride from France to Spain in
aid of the Tadworth Children's Trust with a donation of £200.
As the Rotary year closes we have given over
£700 to the Bletchingley Skills Centre.
We have also recognised two individuals for their outstanding contribution to Rotary. One Bob Greenland was a member of this club until the end of June 2007 when he chose to retire since he now lives in faraway Edenbridge. In Bob's 30 odd years in Rotary he has held most club offices including President. His most recent activity was as International Service Chairman for our Club where he held two Bob's Big Bingo Nights which raised considerable sums of money for Mercy Ships and the Magic Train. The second was our Immediate Past President Graham Woodcock who despite being very new to Rotary stepped into the breach when the incoming President left unexpectedly and did a second year in office as President. They have both been made Paul Harris Fellows (this is an award named after the founder of Rotary). Graham is on the left below, Bob on the right. In the second photograph
